There are two versions of your career right now. One looks exactly like it did three years ago - maintaining Selenium scripts, debugging XPaths, and triaging flaky tests. The other is one where you define what gets tested, why it matters, and how the entire quality system is built. Both are available to you. Only one has a future.

This post is for senior SDETs and QA leads who feel something is shifting in the work but haven't quite named it yet.   • Map coverage as outcomes, not test counts: List the ten most important things your product must always deliver. For each one, check whether your current test suite would catch a regression. You will almost certainly find gaps - and raising them is quality ownership in practice.
  • Get into product discussions before work starts: Ask to join sprint planning or feature design reviews. Your goal is to raise testability and risk questions early - not just to observe. Consistently showing up there changes how leadership sees the QA function.
  • Learn to read and review AI-generated test flows: If your team uses AI test generation, volunteer to lead the review process. Knowing what good generation looks like - and what bad generation looks like - is a skill with real and growing market value.
  • Replace test-volume metrics with outcome metrics in your reporting: Stop reporting pass rate and test count. Start reporting defect escape rate, production incidents tied to coverage gaps, and time-to-confidence per release. This reframes QA as a business function rather than just a technical one.
  • Understand where your team sits on the autonomy maturity model: Be the person who can clearly explain where your organization stands and what the path forward looks like. That is a leadership position, regardless of your title.

The Bottom Line: The Career Is Growing, Not Shrinking

The idea that AI will eliminate QA engineers has it exactly backwards. AI-accelerated development is creating a quality problem that script-based automation alone cannot solve - and the engineers who know how to direct and improve an AI-powered quality system are becoming harder to find and more valuable to keep.

What is going away is a specific version of QA work - the maintenance-heavy, execution-focused role where most of your time went to keeping brittle tests alive. That version of the role was never the best use of a senior engineer's skills. Losing it is not a loss. It is a shift of your time toward the work that always required your judgment in the first place.

The move from script author to quality owner is not a reinvention. It is a step up to the version of the role where your greatest skills and knowledge are finally at the center of the work, not just overhead.
